Spirit of ’69: The Grooviest King Seiko Models

The Legacy of 1969

The King Seiko KS 1969 collection represents one of Seiko’s most celebrated chapters. In 1969, Seiko introduced the 45KCM (“45 King‑Seiko Chronometer Model”), a hi‑beat, sharp-cased dress watch that pushed the boundaries of Japanese horology and mechanical precision. The original 45KCM was characterized by its angular facets, bold geometries, sharp polishing, and a tonneau-shaped case that was both elegant and assertive.

While it featured a manual hi-beat movement (36,000 vph), the watches from that era have become icons not just for their performance but for their design language, which continues with the King Seikos of today: razor-sharp lugs, striking sunburst or textured dials, and fine finishing that can compete with the international luxury watch scene.

These original models illustrated that a distinct heritage Seiko watch could compete on an international stage. Today, King Seiko’s revival of the 45KCM under the KS1969 banner marries that vivid history of the watch with contemporary reliability. This contemporary homage to the 45KCM is faithful to the vintage design language of the watch and the dedication of King Seiko towards high-level finishing, mechanical precision, and reliability. Wearing the spiritual successor of the 45KCM is the horological spirit King Seiko wants to bring to the contemporary watch market.

A New Age for King Seiko: What KS1969 Brings

Today, we’re featuring three standout models from the initial KS1969 collection: the SJE109J1, SJE111J1, and the SJE113J1. Although these watches are strikingly similar to the original 45KCM, they have been updated to meet modern standards of luxury watches. Instead of a manual hi-beat movement, the KS1969 is powered by Seiko’s Caliber 6L35. This slim automatic movement features manual hacking and winding, along with approximately 45 hours of power reserve.

The slim 6L35 movement enables the case to be only 9.9mm thick, while maintaining a 39.4mm case diameter. The stainless steel case of the KS1969 has that signature tonneau shape similar to the 45KCM, along with contemporary upgrades. These watches feature box-shaped sapphire crystals with an anti-reflective inner coating, applied hands and indices, and high-polish surfaces for distortion-free finishing, adding more visual interest and a luxurious look.

All watches feature screw-down casebacks with the classic King Seiko shield emblem instead of exhibition casebacks to stay true to the original 45KCM. Each model offers water resistance of 50 meters and magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m. These specs make them reliable for daily wear while maintaining proper reliability and wrist presence.

The SJE109J1: A Silver Contemporary Classic

The King Seiko SJE109J1 stands as a clean and classic interpretation of the KS1969 aesthetic. Its textured silver dial and multi-faceted indices capture the light dynamically, adding much more visual interest without making the overall aesthetic of the watch look busy. The subtle textures of the silver dial are inspired by the modernity of the Tokyo cityscape, which also serves as a callback to where King Seiko was born.

The stainless steel case measures 39.4 mm in diameter and is just 9.9 mm thick, thanks to the slim Caliber 6L35 movement. As mentioned earlier, this automatic movement features a date display, approximately 45 hours of power reserve, and manual hacking and winding capabilities. The rest of the case maintains the elegant proportions of a King Seiko timepiece, featuring a slim turtle case that houses the beautiful dial and movement, along with 50 meters of water resistance and a combination of brushed and high-polished surfaces for added variety. A box-shaped sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating completes the design. The contemporary updates blended with the rich heritage of the 45KCM silhouette make the SJE109J1 an instant classic for watch collectors and enthusiasts.

The SJE111J1: Royal Sophistication

The SJE111J1 takes a more expressive approach as part of the 45KCM revival. Right off the bat, the bold “Edo purple” dial stands out. The textured purple dial has slight tone shifts that appear differently under various angles, darkening towards the minute track.  The subtle gradient is due to the mottled texture of the dial, which is intended to simulate the look of washi paper. The “Edo purple” also represents the modern Tokyo cityscape, but at night, and the color of royalty during the Edo period.

The SJE111J1 shares the same 39.4 mm stainless steel case, 9.9 mm thickness, and 6L35 movement with its other KS1969 counterparts, offering approximately 45 hours of power reserve. The polished and brushed surfaces of the KS1969 case architecture showcase King Seiko’s continued mastery in case finishing, while the solid case bears the classic King Seiko emblem as a nod to the 45KCM heritage.

The slim turtle case features a subtle taper, making it comfortable to wear on the wrist. At the same time, the box-shaped sapphire crystal, featuring an anti-reflective coating, contributes to the watch’s vintage luxury look. The SJE111J1 embodies the bold restraint of the new KS1969 line from King Seiko, featuring a strikingly colored dial that complements the understated silhouette of the KS1969.

The SJE113J1: Naturally Bold and Refined

Finally, continuing the bold dial choices of King Seiko is the SJE113J1. The rich forest-green dial strikes a perfect balance between the simplicity of the SJE109J1 and the boldness of the SJE111J1. Like its siblings, the textured green dial of the SJE113J1 is inspired by another aspect of the Tokyo cityscape: the various greenery that brings life to the city’s busy streets. The mottled texture of the dial is similar to that of the SJE111J1, as it gradually transitions towards the minute track, appearing darker and adding more visual interest to the timepiece. It transitions from rich green tones to a deep emerald and black towards the edges.

The Caliber 6L35 movement also powers the SJE113J1, offering approximately 45 hours of power reserve. The timepiece features a 39.4mm stainless steel case with 50 meters of water resistance, a box-shaped sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, and a solid screw-down caseback bearing the King Seiko emblem.

The rich green hue of the SJE113J1 is a modern, refreshing take on King Seiko’s dressy, formal design language: a slim turtle  case and high-polish surfaces for a luxurious look, paired with a unique dial that is both striking and subdued.

Keeping it Groovy and Stylish with The KS1969 Collection

The KS1969 line, especially through models like the SJE109J1, SJE111J1, and SJE113J1, brings the timeless spirit of the 1969 45KCM and combines it with King Seiko’s dedication towards horological craftsmanship.

The KS1969 cements King Seiko’s relevance in today’s contemporary luxury watch market, staying true to their design language and aesthetic while constantly improving their work towards precision, reliability, and sophistication. These KS1969 models deliver and keep the stylish and groovy spirit of King Seiko.
